Inserting and Managing Images and Drawing Objects in LibreOffice Writer

LibreOffice Writer allows you to insert and modify images and drawing objects easily. Let’s go over how to work with them step by step.

Inserting an Image in a Document

You can add images to make your documents more attractive and informative. There are several ways to insert images in LibreOffice Writer.

  1. Insert Image Option
  • Go to the Insert menu, click Image, and then choose From File.
  • Select the image from your computer and click Open.
  • The image will appear in your document.
  1. Drag and Drop Option
  • Open the folder where your image is saved.
  • Click on the image and drag it into the document.
  • The image will be inserted where you drop it.
  1. Copy and Paste Method
  • Right-click on an image from another document or webpage and select Copy.
  • In LibreOffice Writer, right-click where you want to place the image and choose Paste.
  1. Inserting an Image by Linking
  • You can link an image instead of embedding it in the document. This keeps the file size smaller.
  • Go to Insert > Image > From File.
  • Check the box labeled Link before you click Open.
  • The image will be displayed, but it stays linked to its original location on your computer.

Modifying Images Using the Image Toolbar

Once you’ve inserted an image, you can change its appearance using the image toolbar. Here are some options:

  1. Resize
  • Use the small square handles around the image to make it bigger or smaller by dragging them.
  1. Crop
  • Click on the image, then go to the Format menu and choose Crop Image.
  • Adjust the edges of the image to crop it as needed.
  1. Delete an Image
  • To delete an image, simply click on it and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Drawing Objects

LibreOffice Writer also allows you to create and modify drawing objects, such as shapes or lines.

Creating Drawing Objects

  • Go to the Drawing Toolbar (usually at the bottom of the window).
  • Select a shape, such as a rectangle or circle, and draw it in the document by clicking and dragging.

Setting or Changing its Properties

  • Right-click on the drawing object and select Properties.
  • You can change the line color, fill color, thickness, and other features.

Resizing and Grouping Drawing Objects

  • Resizing: Click on the drawing object, then use the corner handles to resize it.
  • Grouping: To group several objects together:
    • Hold the Shift key and click on all the objects you want to group.
    • Right-click and select Group. Now, you can move and resize them as a single object.

Positioning Images in the Text

  1. Arrangement
  • Arrangement refers to whether an image is placed in front of or behind the text.
  • Right-click on the image, go to Arrange, and choose options like Bring Forward or Send Backward.
  1. Anchoring
  • Anchoring determines how the image is connected to the text.
  • Right-click the image and choose Anchor.
  • You can anchor the image to a paragraph, to a page, or as a character within the text.
  1. Alignment
  • Alignment controls how the image lines up with the text.
  • Right-click the image, go to Align, and choose options like Left, Center, or Right.
  1. Text Wrapping
  • Text wrapping controls how text flows around an image.
  • Right-click on the image, select Wrap, and choose from options like No Wrap, Page Wrap, or Wrap Through.
  • No Wrap keeps the text away from the image, while Wrap Through allows text to overlap the image.

By following these simple steps, you can make your documents more visually appealing and professional!
