5. What is causation? (Support your answer with two examples of causation)

Causation: Causation is defined as any relationship in which two or more variables interact directly to lead to one outcome or another, such as direct causal influences among them resulting in specific results. Examples include:

Research demonstrates the correlation between smoking and lung cancer; smoking increases your risk for this illness;

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)

Please answer the questions below in no less than 200 words.

1. Is there a correlation between speaking and writing skills of an individual?

Correlation between Speaking and Writing Skills:

There is a strong relationship between speaking and writing skills of an individual. Both speech expression and written expression share several fundamental aspects. People who excel at speech often exhibit better writing abilities – and vice versa! Here are some reasons for this correlation.
Language proficiency can be gained through extensive speaking activities and practice, which helps individuals use and comprehend language structures more efficiently, which leads to improved writing abilities.

Second, both speaking and writing require an understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and syntax – an individual who masters these components will be able to utilize them effectively both verbally and written forms.

Thirdly, having an excellent understanding of language conventions aids effective communication across any medium. From selecting appropriate words while speaking or structuring sentences when writing, linguistic knowledge plays a pivotal role.

Persons with strong communication abilities – speaking and writing alike – tend to possess superior critical thinking capabilities as they can convey their thoughts more precisely and logically.

Overall, research indicates a correlation between speaking and writing skills; specifically the increase of speaking opportunities can enhance both aspects of an individual’s development – for instance a person trying to hone their writing may benefit from engaging more speaking opportunities – and vice versa.

2. If outdoor runners have higher skin disease occurrences due to time exposure in the sun, think of an independent variable that can be used to test the relationship between running and skin diseases. What alternatives can one look for to negate the problem arising out of running outdoors in the sun?

Independent Variable to Test Running and Skin Diseases Relationship:

To explore the relationship between running outdoors and skin diseases, an appropriate independent variable would be sunscreen/sunblock use. By altering this variable, researchers can observe its impact on occurrences of skin disease among outdoor runners. Here’s how the study could be structured:

Participants would be separated into two groups; one would use sunscreen while running outside, and the other group wouldn’t apply any.

A comprehensive study should take place over an extended period to collect sufficient data and take into account factors like weather conditions, length of exposure duration and individual skin types.

Alternatives to Running Outdoors in the Sun:

To reduce the negative side effects of running outside in direct sunlight, runners have several viable solutions at their disposal:

Running in shaded areas: Selecting running routes that offer ample shade, such as parks with tree-covered pathways, can significantly lower direct sun exposure.

Running during off-peak hours: Opting for early mornings or late evening runs when sunlight intensity is lower can help minimize sun exposure.

Wear protective clothing: To help shield their skin from direct sunlight, runners should wear long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses to shield their bodies.

Use sports-specific sunscreens: Some sports-specific sunscreens claim to offer longer-lasting protection during physical activities, including sweat resistance.

Indoor running options: If the sun is out in full force or the temperatures soar beyond 30deg, consider indoor facilities like gyms or indoor tracks to be your go-to running options during peak daylight hours or exceptionally sunny days.

By including these strategies and conducting their proposed study with sunscreen as an independent variable, researchers can gain valuable insight into the correlation between outdoor running and skin diseases and effective preventive measures, and pinpoint effective prevention measures.
